"Be daring enough to tell us-your customers, your fans, your people-about your ambition
because we'll be the ones to help you fulfill them." - Danielle LaPorte
It is a new year. A time of new beginnings. A time to clear out the old and make way for the new and I am ready for it. I have been inching forward in my new business and now it's time to push the go button and let things begin. I am ready to see where this leads.
Just the other day, I was listening to Oprah interview Sue Monk Kidd, the best-selling author of "The Secret Life of Bees." She was talking about her transition from being a nurse to becoming a writer; something that she had wanted to be since she was a child. She was speaking about listening to what is calling from the bottom of your heart. Hear it and then proclaim it.
Last year I proclaimed that I was done teaching in the classroom or in a traditional "teacher" way. I know there is something deeper calling. Something that has always been there.
I have liked to decorate and design spaces for as long as I can remember. When I was little, I spent hours decorating a dollhouse with empty pudding boxes and scraps of fabric. As I got older, I was given free rein to design my bedroom in peach and pale blue (thankfully the sister that I shared it with didn't put up a fuss). I reorganized tupperware drawers while I babysat. I thought about fabrics and patterns. I drew and dreamed.
Then it was time to move on, choose a college, and think about my education. I let fear creep in. I couldn't image how I would ever have the confidence to set out on my own and make it in a life that seemed so foreign and unattainable. I took the path that felt more practical, safe, and more realistic. I don't regret that time. I needed security and I needed time to grow and gain confidence.
Now, I have security. I am blessed with time. I am listening. I am getting to the heart of it.
I know that organizing comes naturally to me. I can see options and possibilities very easily. I feel comfortable collaborating and learning; trying things out and adjusting to fit the situation.
I am going forward with the intention that this is going to be an evolution and decluttering and redesigning will be the place to start. I am hoping that I can make strong connections with people as we declutter their spaces. And whatever I am able to offer of myself through those connections will come as our work together unfolds.
I know that clutter is overwhelming and can make a person feel stuck and I hope that I might bring some light and peace into those spaces, even in a small way. I know that doors will open for me and for my clients as we seek clarity and lighter living.
I can't wait for this new beginning!
What is calling from the bottom of your heart? Have you taken the time to set goals for 2015?
Here is some advice from Martha Beck on how to make them even more powerful.
